So today was the first time I had climbed outside in almost a week and a half and I have to say, I felt like it. I think it is going to take me a week or so to get get my body acclimatized to the elevation and get back into the swing of things. Ute Pass was the destination for the day. I picked my buddies Max and Ben up from Colorado College in Colorado Springs, which is 90 miles SE of Boulder. The temps were pretty cool and it was quite windy but the rock still was a little warm. We warmed up on the Cool Cuts boulder and Max quickly warmed up and sent his first V9, Cool Cuts For Tojo. He was having trouble with a big move out to a gaston but quickly fired it once Ben gave him a little beta that made the move look quite easy, although I then got on it and got promptly shut down.

Max and I moved onto a very esthetic line called Ships Prow. It’s this beautiful arete that is climbed using bad holds and crucial body tension. This problem and I have a bit of history; I fell off the finishing jugs the last time I was in Colorado (I have the video on another hard drive and will upload it once I return to Boulder) so I really wanted to send this problem. When Max and I first got on it and it wasn’t feeling to good and I wasn’t feeling to strong. Granted I didn’t warm up very well and I was feeling a bit fatigued but it still shouldn’t have felt as hard as it did. Well Max got on it and sent it in after a few burns. I rested for a bit and when I got back on it felt much better and started to remember the body positioning. I soon got past the crux but feel again on the upper portion. Next time. All the while Ben was working what he thought could be a new line, just to the left of Ships Prow. Byron later on informed us it was an unnamed V8.

Post Ute Pass we went back to campus and had a short gym session. I got absolutely destroyed and I am definitely feeling it now. It’s good though because I really needed to get outside and climb. I really feel like it is good for my soul; it makes me a happier person. I mean this is why I came out to Colorado. Right?

is the last part about how you left the pass at 4 to go climb in the gym a joke?
